Types of Unseelie Fae

their amusement. That fact has stirred up a general sense of wariness and distaste between fae and those around them, especially humans. For centuries there have been stories and rumors of fae luring humans into the wilderness and wilds only to never be seen or heard from again. The legends coupled with the fact that it was believed these creatures could also disguise themselves as humans lead to a very heightened sense of paranoia. This is what ultimately sparked the interest of the hunters after their inception.

They used one of their own as bait for a rumored fae presence in the woodlands of Wales. What was later learned to be a bean-sidhe, approached the bait to lure him deep into the thick of the trees. Only, to its misfortune, those trees were housing fellow hunters with their crossbows at the ready. The unseelie was soon taken down, captured rather than killed. When she was brought back to the local guild, they used her as the basis for their experiments and it was there the extreme weakness to iron was discovered. This knowledge was put to use in many different ways to try and sniff out the fae, like replacing utensils or touching suspected fae with something crafted from iron.

The seelie saw opportunity of a mutually beneficial agreement with the humans. In an effort to protect themselves, the offered a deal to the humans. For a time they worked together, but on both sides, there were those that began to question why they were helping the other. The more years that passed, the weaker the alliance became until it was no more. The fae were, after all, fickle sorts. Though there were those that still sought to help, there were also those that did not feel it was in their personal best interest, or the fae’s interest at all to aid the humans.

It was the fae who discovered the settlement of New Orleans, a haven for those who did not wish to fight constantly. A town hidden away in the thick of the swamps of Louisiana with no clear way to get there, rumors of this place eventually spread, leading up to today where it is one of the better known supernatural capitals.

Unseelie Fae

While the history of the fae courts has truly been lost to time itself, rumor has it that the original fae existed in harmony with each other in one court ruled by the Four Divinities - Sehanine, Pelor, Lolth, and Corellon, who presided each over one of the four seasons. As time went on, it found Sehanine and Lolth vying heavily for the favor of Pelor, the god of sun and the summer months. Wherever Pelor’s attention turned, one would become envious of the other, and the desire to persevere intensified more and more as the seasons came and went.

The tricks and mischief soon turned into something darker when Lolth finally came to realize that Sehanine had won the favor of their beloved Pelor. Realizing her loss but refusing to accept it, she took the news to Corellon, ruler of the autumn months and the brother she shared with Sehanine. Upset by the discovery, Corellon vowed to exact revenge upon Sehanine and Pelor with Lolth and they called upon the fae who were loyal to them, removing themselves from the court and retreating to the darkest recesses of the forests. After a time, Lolth and Corellon gathered their fae around them and created their own retinue known as the Unseelie, choosing to exist in the shadows and preside over the autumn and winter months as the Winter Court. After learning that Lolth and Corellon had united against them, Sehanine and Pelor decided they also needed to provide safety for their own courts, thus joining the spring and summer months together in unity as Seelie under the banner of the Summer Court.

The fae have always been infamous for their trickery, mostly treating the world around them as a stage for

Bean-Sidhe

The subject of mysterious tales passed down by human tongue of horrific and yet beautiful creatures of the night. They are almost the wraith or the death spirits of the fae and can be quite unorthodox in the way they present themselves in their daily life. Often considered the true riddlers and storytellers of all the fae, the Banshee utilize their silver tongues and masked words to play tricks and taunt humans into misfortunes for their own benefit.

When they are unglamoured they do not have the ability to fly and are without wings, yet they can possess fae characteristics such as elongated ears, unnatural eyes, skin, and hair.

Harpy

Sharp featured and sharped tongued, harpies are quick-witted and flighty with little to no filter when they speak. They show little concern for anyone they might insult or offend and will often use their words as weapons, though they can be just as physically cruel and violent. In their unglamoured form, they possess the feathered wings of a bird and occasionally possess other birdlike features such as clawed feet and a beak.

Their glamoured form, however, can range from incredibly beautiful to a wretched hag-like appearance, though both are inherently human in description and possess sharp, very defined features.

Nix

Unbelievably skilled with musical instruments, the nix uses this ability to lure other beings into their traps, whether they be physical or metaphorical. Nix can range from unearthly beautiful to absolutely grotesque and can fall in love with non-fae beings. They are rumored to sometimes disappear back to the forests without a trace for undetermined amounts of time and leave their lovers and even families heartbroken.

Unglamoured, they have typical fae features ranging from elongated ears to unnaturally colored eyes, hair, and skin. Unlike most other fae, the nix can also be terribly ugly in both their glamoured or unglamoured state.

Drow

Also known as ‘dark elves’ these creatures prefer solitude and are noted to live mainly underground or in caves. They are very untrusting of other species and are often described as highly intelligent and brash, often not seen as being anything but humble and distant to others. They are described as dark skinned, ranging from black flesh to a blue tinted/grey hue.

Drow hold the same physical qualities as that of their high elven counterparts such as their elongated, pointed ears, beautiful features, and slight build.

Siren

Much like the mermaid, the siren possesses the bottom half of a fish when they are in water and can be very beautiful. However, sirens are dangerous creatures, using their incredible singing voice and painfully sad songs to influence and charm people into doing things they would normally not do. Master manipulators, sirens prey on those with low self-esteem or willpower.

Unglamoured, they possess the scaled tail and occasionally fins of a fish, and their faces can range from hauntingly beautiful to terrifying, while glamoured they are serenely beautiful with no remnants of their siren form.

Ghuls

The Ghul are cannibalistic shape shifting creatures. Their glamour is so strong that they can easily fit in and blend with other races (including werewolves and vampires). They don’t, however, get the racial benefits of whom they’re shifting to (magic, strength, speed, etc.)

Like the Marid, Ghuls are not bound by a true name, but rather, tied an object that binds the creature to whomever possesses the item. Additionally, unlike other Unseelie, Ghul don’t need to feed on emotions to survive and replenish their glamour, but instead, they must feed on the flesh of the living or dead.

Strengths and Weaknesses

  • Charismatic: Fae are extremely charismatic by nature. Whether it is due to their looks or talents, they are known to be very apt at persuasion and high ability to influence others.

  • Glamour: While other races are believed by humans to disguise themselves to look more human, fae are really the only ones who can fully alter their appearance through glamour. They may take on the form of any of the existing races, mimicking their appearance completely. However, they will not retain the voice or abilities of that person.

  • Detect FaeFae are able to detect each other like it is another sense. While they won't be able to tell what kind of fae through a glamour, they will be able to sense what Court the other fae belongs to.

  • Iron: Fae have a pretty severe reaction to iron. Not only will it burn them upon contact, but it will also weaken them. Depending on how much they are exposed to, it can actually break their glamour and force them into their true form.

  • Fair Minded: Fae are fair creatures and are unable to break a contract under any circumstances. A fae will always be bound to uphold their end of the deal until a contract is already broken or expired.

  • True Name: If a fae's true name is discovered, the person who holds that knowledge will have power over the fae. Because of this, fae keep their true names a closely guarded secret from anythone beyond their most loved and trusted ones.

  • Oaths: Oaths are serious amongst the fae and are conducted with a great deal of respect and loyalty. For the fae, an Oath is taken with a lot of thought and dedication concerning the matter, as such things tend to also be magically binding; IE if true names are given to show true loyalty. There are oaths between a fae and the leader of their sithen and there are also personal oaths which may exist. Fae are always careful with which oaths they give, due to the binding nature of such verbal contracts.

Feeding

In order to sustain themselves, the fae feed off of other people's emotions. Seelie will feed off of more positive emotions like happiness, kindness, and love. Unseelie, on the other side of the coin, will feed off of more negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, and anger. It is not uncommon for fae to try and drive their subject to these feelings so that they may more easily feed rather than hunting down people already feeling in such a way.

Lifespan

Deity

Lolth- Sehanine’s twin, the goddess of shadow and lies finds a home with any who delight in weaving mischief and obfuscation. She delights in trickery and taking advantage of others to her benefit.

Fae lifespans can reach several thousand years, though no one is sure the exact limit. To play a fae over 1,000 years old, admin approval is necessary.
